Figlio di un mercante di granaglie venne avviato agli studi di legge e iniziò a lavorare presso un avvocato. Data fondamentale però per la sua carriera d’artista fu il 1890, quando cominciò a dedicarsi alla pittura frequentando la scuola di Quentin-Latour.
